What the heck does the tag line He knows what to do
for the Diwali’s big release Vallavan. Can someone explain me?
Amar and I planned for the usual 2nd or the night show at Rakki which starts by 10.00 PM. Felt sleepy yesterday and slept from 7 PM. Was confident that my cellular will wake me at 8.30 PM. Forgot the fact that my mobile was running a 24 hour format clock, programmed the alarm for 8.30 PM. Amar had called thrice and sent a few SMSes. By the time it was 9.35 PM, woke up to Amar’s last try and told him that will be at Rakki in another five minutes. Reached the theatre by 9.50 PM and bought the tickets and the found from a friend that the movie starts by 10.15 PM and has eighteeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeen reels. So, definitely we were in for a bigggggggggggggggg 3 hour treat. Definitely, it was.
Vallavan stars Chimbu a.k.a T.R.Silambarasan, Nayanthara,
Reema Sen, Sandhya, Santhanam, Sathyan, S.Vee.Sekhar and who does not?
Belive it or not, this movie is Chimbhu’s first full time direction venture and there is a strrrrrrrrrrrrong story line. Chimbu and Sandhya are close friends from school life. Chimbhu loves Nayanthara in college where Nayanthara (3 years older than Chimbhu) is a trainee lecturer. The love breaks when Nayan comes to know that Chimbhu is a student in the same college and younger than her. One cannot forget the act by Santhanam (the lollu-sabha fame) and his crew. Truly a good comedy track that goes on well with the movie. He has outperformed his earlier appearances in manmadhan
and ah-aah
. Truely a great performance. The firssssssssssssst halllllllllllllllllf ends this way. A very long one with nearly a dozen songs. Everyone at the theatre was craving for a break.
Priyan, the cinematogrpher, has done a good job capturing songs really well and mainly for tolerating Chimbhu’s idiosyncracies. Chimbhu is alkl there in the movie. Nayan is really beautiful after her weight loss and does a fair good job in acting. Reema is good and Sandhya is all time standing like Barbie behind Chimbhu. Balakumaran is the dialogue writer and really the dialogues are well. For some people, who want to know the swear words in tamil, watch Vallavan. Even Reema uses the baddest swear word in tamil. Yuvan , with his young and peppy music, steals the show. As always, he scores a point extra in re-recording and Goodness me! all the 9 songs are a big hit. Chimbhu has tried to stick all the songs at all the possible places he can and he has succeeded to an extent. My favorite number is Yammadi, Aathadi
by Suchitra (of the Radio mirchi fame) and T.Rajendar. The songs are filmed very well with extravagant sets (I understand why the producer was upset with Chimbhu) and a lot, sorry a loooooooooootttttttttttt of people dancing around.
The second half starts with the flashback where Chimbhu falls in love with Reema Sen in a school culturals show. Chimbhu, Sandhya and Santhanam in school attire. Ok, I can tolerate to an extent. But Reema in a pinnaform. Come on Chimbhu! Wake up! We cannot accept whatever you do. Coming back to the story, Reema is projected as a crazy and pscychotic person who wants Chimbhu to be on her feet all the time as he is in love with her. Chimbhu does all the childish acts, finally ditches Reema Sen when she tries to ditch him. Too much of childish behaviour at this moment could have been avoided. It includes the screenplay, direction. The scenes involving Chimbhu and Reema are too pathetic. Once again, Santhanam steals the show with his comedy track at the school. Flash back ends with Reema and Chimbhu parting away. Reema enters the scene again and challenges Chimbhu that she is the one who is gonna marry him. Chimbhu challenges to his part. Amar challenges me that the movie will run for 50 days. I challenge him that the movie will run for 500 days. Oops! Challenging is addictive. God save us!
Somebody advise Chimbhu that we cannot tolerate his punch dialogues. Really they are punch dialogues. Or else, why else would Amar punched me for bringing him to the movie? When is Chimbhu gonna stop speaking about life, first, last, love. All his punch dialogues are composed of these four words. There was a voice in the theatre that he is trying to convey message to Dhanush? Is he ? No film politics! If someone counts how many times the word love
is used in the movie, I will buy him a free ticket to Vallavan.
Amar : oh God! when will the movie end?
Me : My back and bottoms are aching man!
By this time, we saw a guy leave the theatre thinking that the movie got over and he came back after hering the Yammadi, Aathadi
song. Poor soul, could very well have escaped.
Chimbhu does some sentimental act and gets in good books of Nayan again. They decide to marry, By this time, Reema kidnaps Sandhya and has Chimbhu going nuts. Wait, is it only Chimbhu or the audience?
Will Sandhya die in the hands of psychotic Reema?
Will Chimbhu save Sandhya?
Will Chimbhu and Nayan marry and live happily ever after?
Truely an interesting climax. You should definitely spend Rupees 60 and three looooooooonnnnnnnng hours for this Chimbhu’s directional venture.
A million dollar for the one who guesses the climax before watching the movie.
The film finally ends with the tag
A Film by,
T.R.Silambarasan
He knows what to do
Amar : Did you check out the tag line , He knows what to do
?
Me : Ony he does!
Vallavan – 20 % Nayanthara + 20 % Reema Sen + 10 % Sandhya + 50 % Chimbhu masala.
அரைச்ச மாவ அரைப்போமா , துவச்ச துணியை துவப்போமா
Me : Amar! What is our next week-end movie? E
or Varalaaru
?
Amar is already running home.
hahah good one.
Now should i watch the movie? Atleast for the chimbu-nayantara “scenes”?
You know what i should do
Umesh,
Don’t miss watching this movie. (Amar says to me, he is trying to escape, don’t leave him).
If you had watched TR’s movies, he will never touch a girl or will be a KM away from the hero-ine . That being is said, Chimbhu is always on nayantara. Who said like father, like son ? Did I Scream it aloud? Chimbhu will coin a punch dialogue.
hey…..cool review….i am surprised to read such review from a grrrreeeeeeaaaaat chimbu(as u call him!!) fan…..i think ur time pass is to waste money and time…..so u r plannin to see the movie once again with AMAR…….
will he leave u alive if u call him…….
u r very much influenced by his punch dialogs it seems…..plzzzzzzz dont put mokkai by using those dialogs to me….ha..ha…..
anyways….u just made me to reconsider the idea of watching the movie…..thanx
Hahaha!
Good… I’m eagerly waiting to watch movie vallavan. After long years goin to watch a lengthy movie..
Gud to see
Simbu Vs Reemaaaaaaaa Se?… and Nayan ???..
Shantha anna!
Thanks for the comment and welcome to karthickraghavan.com. Yeah! A long and lengthy one. Before that why don’t you gear up watching a Kannada movie? Heard that they are really good.
Simbu has a great talent..no doubt about that. But I guess this movie is not presented well..
Karthick, you forgot to add some of the punch dialogues like
“nan yaru teriyuma..geetha da..” and the one that follows..
“Left la kuthna right la thirumbikum..”
Anthony has done a neat job.Yuvan’s bg score is perfect to each scene.Simbu – long way to go..its time to start thinking big!
Oops.I dono why my previous comment is showing your name..I might have goofed up!
hey……tell me how was varalaaru……the comment which i gave abt it was really correct?? or as a THALA fan u enjoyed the movie??
Yes Badri!
And regarding the punch dialogues, Amar will pelt stones if I write about them here. He has had enough and does not speak to me well after watching the movie.
I did expect much from Chimbhu as he is the most talented youngster now in the industry, but I was much disappointed. Anyway, he has a long way to go and I will have a big hole in my wallet.
Did you think of starting the comment with ” Karthik ” ? You entered the name field wrongly and I fixed it up for you.
Cheers!
Radhu,
I ain’t anyone’s fan. Anyway, I missed the movie as it is not screened in Rakki complex. But, watched ‘E’. Watch out for a review on that. I may catch up Varalaru next month. Till then hehehe ‘E’.

Recently I happend to see vallavan (I never had an idea to watch the film… but after your review… you made me..). I normally consider Ananda Vikatan’s review, to an extent Madan’s Thiraipaarvai in Star Vijay. Next to them, I think I need to check in with your blog… good work… any idea of becoming a critic?
Fine, lets come to the point. I wanna ask a critic about reviewing a film. What is expected out of a film..? Entertainment? If yes, wat exactly means entertainment? A Comedy, message to audiences or society, family drama, recent happenings, history.. If somebody says commerical cinema… then what is commercial cinema… Vulgarity, double meaning dialogues, to show the intimacy of love picturising a song in a rain sequence… wat is expected out of a film… Is it a director’s choice or producers choice or audiences expectation… If it going to be Director’s choice, I personally cannot accept Chimbu as a director… what does he know about film, acting, directing, story, screenplay.. he might be good in technical aspects due to technological advancement but storyline and the screenplay are the most important thing for making a film a huge success… he is a “Kaathu kutti” in my words.. right from his birth, he may in involved in cinema activities, it doesn’t mean he knows cinema… if he says so, even my milkvendors buffolos are eating cinema posters right from their birth, does it mean that it eat cinema breath cinema… etc… One thing I understood after watching the movies for 3 long hours… he wanted to be with Nayanthara, Reema and Sandhya. Music was another scrap, I don’t see any need for lyricists to write a song like “loose pennae.. or ammadi aathaadi” any drunkard can write, sing, choreograph and record the songs…I don’t see anything good in Priyan’s cinematography.. he did nothing other than capturing body movements with the help of Technological tools, this can be done by anybody if they are trained. Cinematography should be like, even in silence the camera should speak… the true Rasikan should be in a position to understand the story line… chumma capturing the heroines, rain dance, etc., does not make a cameraman…
Finally… Thenappan’s Sanidisai… Chimbuvukku Sukkradisai… by all means….
Badri!
I strongly think that I and you share a similar passion of watching all kind of movies. Will you believe that I watch the telugu movies dubbed in tamil. I would say that it is the audience who are made the scapegoat at the end of the day. A lot of directors make ultimate crap movies in the name of commercial cinema. I think 2004 and 2005 was even better and had a few good movies like kaadhal, Kanda naal mudhal, ponniyin selvan, Ram and a few. 2006 is the worst year for tamil cinema with films like Vallavan, Jambhavan, Sillunnu oru kaadhal, kalvani kaadhali and many.
Let’s hope that a miracle happens to tamil cinema and we start getting films like Metti, Moonram Pirai, Vaaname Ellai, Mahanadhi etc;
Great man shows his greatness by the way he treat little ma(e)n – Thomas Carlyle
I do not know why i quote this, but it flashed as i read some of the comments.
I have a doubt and i request it be clarified. Is story really essential for a film?
I don’t know what exactly “Kaathu Kutti” refers to.
One particular point was intersting to me. “any drunkard can write, sing, choreograph and record the songs …. with the help of Technological tools, this can be done by anybody if they are trained.” True, but how many of us are intersted to listen them (drunkards works)? And how long should they be trained?
Simbu may be a braggart, yet he may have some talent (at least) . I only blame Mr. (Vijaya) T.Rajendar (not sure of the spelling) for Simbu as he is now. He spoiled him, never allowing him to be himself but as little superstar.
I sincerely apologise, if i hurt somebody. Thanks
Hey Thomas!
Welcome to karthickraghavan.com
“Kaathu Kutti” refers to a person who is still in the learning stage or can be called a novice.
Simbu or Chimbhu is talented and I don’t think he heeds to T.R.’s advice when it comes to acting and movie. This I heard from T.R. in an interview on TV.
Regarding your doubt, it depends on the viewer’s perspective. I divide movies into three categories.
1. Movies which have a strong story line. The screenplay sails along with the story and songs and fights fit in with it. Some examples are Anbae Sivam, Metti,Moonram Pirai.
2. Movies which may or may not have a strong story line and are just shot for entertainment. Some examples are Batsha,Ullaththai Allith thaa.
3. Movies which are proclaimed to have a story line (sometimes by the hero or the director) and which does not fit in to the two categories given above. A lot of movies fit into this category. Some examples are S.J.Surya’s movies, many Ajith and Vijay movies.
Now, you need to decide where Vallavan fits in this three. And by the way, you don’t have to apologise as you are free to comment unless your words are too offensive. I don’t think they are.
it would be better for him if he acted very good instead of acting as a fool-spectal
i think he spoiled his image
his ideas are good but his acting in submission is hastily waste
Me too nite show … rakki
padam sema mokkai
Balaji,
Welcome to karthickraghavan.com and thanks for your comment. You also watched it in Rakki. Good man! Rakki rules!

Hi Karthik
I reached your webpage from google, while I was trying to find the ending of this really loooong movie. I started watching the movie on the flight, and since it was sooooo long, i couldnt complete the movie before the entertainment was switched off !!!!!!!
Anyway, guess should read more of your reviews before i watch other movies. (which mostly is in the in-flight section)
Saw Varalaru – Pathetic dont watch
E – Ok tolerable … nothing exceptional about it, the story does not go anywhere and wafer thin story line is really hard to sustain.
One movie of the recent which I liked was “Sillunu oru kaadal” – really good performance.
I also watched “Mozhi” in chennai this time, really a fabulous movie.
Ramna
hai I love chimbu
simbu i have collective stories in my hand if it make as film am giving sure that you will become universal actor also am want to direct that film and my ph no:09495294453
