Veyil – Movie review
Dec 11th, 2006 by Karthick
Saturday night and it’s time for a movie. This time, it was Selva who accompanied me to the latest tamil release Veyil
. Here is my review. Selva a.k.a Aiyya happens to be my childhood neighbour cum friend cum colleague. He is one of our regular group of Rakki goers.
|_. Movie Name|Veyil|
|_. Language|Tamil|
|_. Cast|Pasupathi, Barath, Bhavana, Shreya Reddy, Priyanka (debutante from Malayalam TV industry) and others|
|_. Music|G.V. Prakash (A.R.Rehman’s nephew)|
|_. Cinematography|Madhi|
|_. Direction|Vasantha Balan|
|_. Production|Director Shankar’s S pictures|
Veyil is Vasantha Balan’s directional venture. After Kaadhal, Imsai Arasan movies’ success, Shankar has learnt that it is better to give a chance to his assistants rather than take risk by introducing some other director in his production. Full credit to Vasantha Balan and he has proved that he is no less to Balaji Shakthivel (Kaadhal fame).
Veyil is a story which does not rely on heroisms, punch dialogues, a separate comedy track, extravagant sets, double meaning dialogues et all for success.
Veyil relies on a strong story line, beautiful cinematography, best actors, good music.
h3. Story
Veyil starts with the childhood life of Murugesan (Pasupathi) and Kadhiresan (Barath) in a small village near Virudhunagar. Pasupathi is a movie junkie and is severely punished by his dad for bunking school and watching movies. His dad, a butcher by profession, beats him up severely and leaves him in hot sun for a whole day. Murugesan flees his house with his mom’s jewels and a little money stolen from home. He reaches Thirukazhugunram where he spends and loses all the money watching movies. Nowhere to go, he stays in the cinema theatre and grows to become operator in the cinema theatre. Meanwhile, kathiresan (Barath) goes to school and is nursed by his parents and he starts an advertising company in his village.
Every tamil movie must have a Villain and in this movie, it is Barath’s ex-employer Bose. He is jealous of Barath’s growth and tries to hinder it by all means. Meenakshi (Bhavana) is a college girl who meets Barath while recording for his adverts. Barath is shown as an arrogant and angry young man who forces Bhavana to record the way he wants. Director has not relied on a separate comedy track as Barath does this part well. A subtle comedy track to be precise.
Pasupathi grows out to become the theatre operator and falls in love with Thangam (Priyanka) who is the daughter of a tea shop owner. Love blossoms between the two and they plan to get married. Pasupathi, in his Johnny style look,
steals the show. He has once again proved that he can speak volumes with his eyes. The love ends in a tragedy with Thangam forced to kill herself and Pasupathi left stranded alone. Pasupathi starts drinking and is forced out of the place when the theatre is closed down. Pasupathi, on his mentor’s advice, leaves for his home town.
Barath builds his advertising empire and expands in a big way. The enmity with his ex-employer Bose also grows larger. Barath expresses his love for Bhavana which she accepts. Barath’s life goes all his way with he winning big contracts for local advertising.
Pasupathi reaches his home town after twenty years and is chased away by his dad who does not forget the prodigal son’s deeds. Pasupathi happens to meet his younger brother Barath and is brought home. Barath fights with his dad and Pasupathi is allowed to stay at home with his parents and siblings. Pasupathi happens to meet Pandiyamma (Shreya Reddy),
his childhood sweetheart, and finds that she is left single after a broken marriage. Pasupathi finds nothing to do at home and at is not allowed to work at his brother’s place. He feels like a unfit piece of a jig-saw puzzle. He is not shown love by his younger sisters or his father. He feels solace in Shreya Reddy’s company. He fights with his emotions and thinks that he has wasted his life and has nothing to do. He yearns for the love which is showered on his younger brother Barath.
Barath fixes up marriage for one of his sisters. Pasupathi is blamed and insulted for the loss of marriage jewels. The family comes to know that he is not the reason for it when the jewels are recovered. Pasupathi decides to leave the house and goes away from the family. Meanwhile, Bose plans to kill Barath and employs people for the task. Barath is attacked by villain’s men when he goes in search for his brother. Pasupathi finds Barath amidst the pool of blood and comes to rescue him.
Will Barath survive the murder attempt?
Will Pasupathi save Barath and revenge Bose?
Will Pasupathi’s father realize his mistake?
You got to watch the movie’s climax for the answers.
h3. Music
Music is by G.V. Prakash Kumar, the 18 year old nephew of A.R.R. He scores well for the BGM and has churned out a few good ones in his debut. A good note is that one can understand the lyrics better
h4. Uruguthey…Maruguthey…
The melody by Shankar Mahadevan and Shreya Goshal is the best of the songs.
h4. Veyilodu Urvaadi…
The first song has a folksy touch and clear lyrics with voice rendering from Jassie Kift, Thippu and others.
h4. Kaadhal Neruppin nadanam…
A number with Karthik and Chinmayi coming in for the duet has some foot tapping beats.
Madhi, the cinematographer gets some credit for showing the dusty village and the scorching heat of Tamil Nadu summer realistically. The colours chosen for the different time eras are to be appreciated. One can really find his work in the Kaadhal Neruppin nadanam song.
The fast movement and the adjacent colours add robustness to the melody.
Vasantha Balan has been choosy in his cast and does a good job in it. pasupathi is the hero of the movie with his known and awesome potential for acting. Either be it the romantic scenes with Priyanka or the scenes showing his brotherly love with Barath or the scenes showing his inner turmoils or the action sequence he proves that he can do magic with his eyes. Sabash to pasupathi!
Bhavana, Priyanka, Shreya Reddy have done their job well with their good acting skills. Barath, is getting more and more matured with his movies. After his success in Kaadhal and Emtan Magan he has showed that he can don any role and is different from the rest of the young actors in Kollywood. The good part is that he is trying to do a bit of comedy which most of the young heroes are trying to capitalise on.
Vasantha Balan has packed as many scenes as he can and has succeeded in making a good movie altogether. The second half slows down a bit. Some scenes involving Pasupathi’s sentiments could have been avoided as one can hear people in the theatre complaining that the movie is over sentimental. The director has tried to touch down the baseline of relationships and feelings and he has succeeded for the most part of it. This being his directional venture, one needs to really appreciate the efforts to make a good film.
I felt really satisfied watching a very good movie after a very long time.
Veyil – The heat is on. A perfect watch for a movie lover.
Vasantha Balan has directed a film – Album – earlier – which was a flop – and was without a chance for long time. SOme songs by Karthik Raja are good in that film.
I did not see quite an impact, as mentioned in the review. I have seen the movie in Bangalore. There were only about 50-100 audience, that too on second day.
Though I personally liked the movie, the portrayal is too slow in most part of the film (except for the starting sequence) and everyone was eager to go out.
I don’t know about the success of the movie, but it definitely does not fit into azhagi/kadhal genre.
hey karthick,
do u really know wat is a review means,
u have told the complete story here as you have published the entire script, dont you have any responsibilty,

– Netiquette
Guys!
Welcome to Karthickraghavan.com.
Ramesh,
I did not know that. Thanks for pointing it out.
Kumar,
I will have really enjoyed the movie if the audience were much appreciative. It was packed house here and a lot of youngsters and college goers were there. A lot of disturbance while watching the movie.
By the way, this is a review written in my point of view. I understand that you would not have liked much as I did. I do appreciate your points here. May be the speed does not match up with the current trend of movies.
Ravi,
Here is the definition for review .
It is my style of reviewing a movie. You have not referred any movie blogs to read. So, please go with Balaji’s advice on Netiquette.
Balaji,
Thanks!
Karthick,
This is a movie for the people who understands human emotions. Cinematography was really good. but it is not so exceptional. Especially in fight sequence most of the shots were closeup shots. This will not give the full depth of the sequence. In simple, cinematographer has not concentrated too much to bring out the anger of the hero (Pasupathi) or Bharath in the fight sequences. And I would also like to pinpoint one small mistake which might get unnoticed. When Pasupathi’s lover tells that her parents arranged her marriage the next day she mentioned that it is in Vadapalani. But the story revolves around Virudhunagar. I feel it is the duty of the assistant directors to concentrate on these things. Other than this, the film is really good. Songs were picturised nicely. Father character is damn good, when he brings out his anger in the cinema hall, or when he sees the son after twenty long years or in the climax, he proved to be a real “Devar”. Screenplay, cinematography, music (except rerecording) Costumes, Characterisation are simply superb.
Real good movie, not of an entertainment stuff. You can have so many meanings for the titile… but I feel its good to have as
Veyil…
Emotions are always HOT
Sabaree mama,
Welcome and thanks for the comment. I knew that you will like this movie.
I ain’t an expert in cinematography. So, will go with your words. I did notice the Vadapalani scene in the movie. But I thought they planned to get the girl married in Chennai Vadapalani temple. I don’t think the Pasupathi – Malavikaa part is revolving around Virudhunagar. I think it is shown as Thirukazhukundram. Am i correct? Anyone who watched Veyil will help us here.
Karthick,
Yes. you are right, the episode happens in Thirukazhukundram where the younger murugesan get down on the way to chennai in the run away. The place supposed to be close to Chennai.
while i was reading the review i just remembered a sun tv review that comes every friday night with the story line of the movie being revealed and yet the suspense of the climax remains a thangamalai secret ..i loved reading this .i shall watch the movie sooner
Murugan,
Welcome to Karthickraghavan.com and thanks for the comment. Hope to see your footsteps in future.
Gayu,
Yes it is Sidhambara Rahasiyam.
Was reading Anantha Vikatan’s review of Veyil, after writing mine, and found a lot of similarities. The synopsis was simply superb and the reviewer had even let out the climax.
I committed a mistake by naming the new actress Priyanka as Malavika. Have changed it in my review. Apologies for the same.
People,
My hearty thanks to Prakash and Gilli team for linking my review of Veyil in Gilli .
Nice review…n I watched this movie last week.
@ ravi
Review doesn’t break the suspense anyways, go and watch the movie to get the heat of Veyil!
Fabulous.
I saw this movie last night. Quite frankly its a great movie. In one of the interviews shankar mentioned that he started “S Pictures” to give chances to those stories, which he could not do.
“Pasupathi” is Karuppu Kamal, in my opinion.
Mr Kumar, what to you mean by the portrayal is too slow? This is quite ideal for this kind of movies. Moreover, we cannot simply portray “Bharath becomes a big businessman in one song”. Veyil’ movie making is compeltely coincides with the story.
MUST watch MOVIE
I wonder if there is any work for the Tamil Nadu Police in the movie: O (Poor thing give them some credits! lol)
Most recent Tamil pictures are becoming so violent that I feel I am in Afghanistan and not in India
I somehow like the movie but question the directors as to why they need to show so much so blood and violence.
Plzzz teach people to be happy. AND Tamil industry needs to work more on humor (meaning not just Vivek, Vadivel & others but the entire movie)
Veyyil! Chill out…
Dear movie lovers
I am really proud as am a tamil. after long years only I had a chance to watch a great tamil movie. It has very good script, charaterasation, very peerfect acting(not as usual dramatic and stupid execration). There was two duet song are the only disturbance for the story movements. I feel verymuch our traditional rich tamil culture and smell our homeland by watching this movie. each and every frame i enjoied. As a serious movie watching man i can say lot about this movie if anyone contact me directly. I am strongly recomend our young generation to watch this movie for identy fy our rich dravidian tradition
hidayath
Hi Hidayath,
Welcome here. I am happy that you liked this movie.
EXcellent Movie. Every frame was painstakingly directed and portrayed by excellent actor(s). Song sequences are out of this world and I felt like I want to hear the song again and again. Pasupathi is a hidden gem that is going places in cinema world. I think he is going to win some awards for this movie. So is the director. Again, with excellent storyline, the movie excells in every way. I give 10+ and I was very very satisfied with the currently projects coming out of the kollywood. I felt like I wanted to see this movie in big screen but where I live in overseas, I can only get it on DVD. I get I would have cried alll the way home though.. I highly recommend this movie and I enjoyed it very much.
this is not a review sir….. full view of movie… padathukku pokalama ? venama ? padam than ingayee parthacheee
Hi
Your site is very fine……..
Great direction. Shankar’s effort is sure to be a starter for new talents to emerge.
Regarding the background scores(G V Prakash), when Pasupathy returns to his home town, the violin background music is almost a replica of Yanni’s compositions.
The movie was so great ! Its SuperB ! Pasupathy proves the world that he is capable to lead in any role . This movie was a hit around the world. I dont know why the people in India specifically in Tamil Nadu cant understand about a persons great acting role . We in Malaysia likes a movie that is believeable and makes sense(Exmp : Maniratnam Movies , Padmasri Kamalhasan Movies ,Surya and Vikram) , unlike some other movies flying like a Superman , happy ending like fairy tales , bored stories and same old folks love stories . If Tamil Film Industry wants to competite with Bollywood , they must begin to make diffrent stories . Its not going backward like Malayalam and Telugu movies .
Am Sid, from Mumbai, although am a hardcore mumbai ite ve been fortunate to be bought up in a south indian locality! so i know Tamil quite well, and being a ARDENT CINEMA BUFF, right from jean noir -kurusuwa-fuller-lean-scroscse-tarantino-mani ratnam-bala etc 2 name a few,,, and i always make it a point to watch menaingful CINEMA,, happened to Watch Veyil,, althought it dragged and wwas a bit overboard melodramticallly at some parts,,but to cover it all ,,,u have mind blowing performance,, and gud music EDITOR has failed in hisjob (my personal oppinion) neer knew it can come from SHANKER,,,i m nt tht a shanker FAN guess he can make 25 veyils with the budget of one SIVAJI,,, i mean really cant believe he has actually produced it,,niways would appreciate if some one reccomends,,me some good TAMIL CINEMA ,,off late,, a.l.a. Veyil,,,
Thanks GUYS

My name is Piter Jankovich. oOnly want to tell, that your blog is really cool
And want to ask you: is this blog your hobby?
P.S. Sorry for my bad english
Do you acknowledge that it’s high time to get the business loans, which would make your dreams come true.
An intense drama, poignant and touching.Sperb performance by all actors..But for the fight scenes which were much exaggerated and beyond credibility..the movie would have been a remarkable one
