How to create, share and collaborate documents in Tamil or other regional languages using Google Tools – Cloud Solution

My dad, at 60, is a voracious blogger who comes up with a lot of curious questions on computers. He uses a HP laptop with Windows Vista ( $%^!) which I used a few years ago . I never gave him admin rights on his laptop considering the curiosity of his computer skills(!!!) until later part of last year. Yesterday, he was complaining that the MS Office software in his laptop stopped working after he clicked on something about trial membership of 2007. Now, he says he could not create documents in the laptop. I was thinking of a simpler solution where in he does not have to worry about installing huge chunk of software still create documents without much hassle. It occurred to me, this is the right time I bring him to the cloud.

Here are a few benefits, as I can see –
1. Stop paying for software to create documents.
2.Documents are saved in the cloud, which is highly available Google servers.
3. Easy for collaboration (sharing, contribution etc) with friends and family.

So, here is an attempt to help my dad on “How to create documents in Tamil using Google Tools – Cloud Solution”. Let me know if this silly or useful or whatever in comments. Happy Cloud Computing!

1. Create a Google account from here. Almost, everybody has one.
2. Install the Google chrome browser from here. Although this solution works with Internet Explorer browser, I personally recommend Google Chrome which is faster.
3. Download the Google Transliteration IME from here choosing Tamil as the language. other languages can also be installed based on user’s needs. At the time of this writing, Google Transliteration IME support 22 different languages.
4. Go through the process of setting up language bar to support Tamil. Detailed instructions given here.
5. Login to Google Docs with Google account here. Click ‘Create new Document’.
6. Click on “EN” Language bar and change the language input to “TA” Tamil. the Language bar is found in the task bar.
7. Start typing and Google will transliterate. For ex: In order to write தொலைபேசி, one has to type “TholaiPesi”. It takes a few minutes to get accustomed to google transliteration. Once done typing, change the language back to English by clicking TA in the Language bar.
8. Save the document and format according to the needs.

P.S. : The whole process of installing and using Google Transliteration IME can be eliminated using online Google transliteration too. But for the ease of it, Google Transliteration IME option comes in handy with other uses and saves a lot of ‘ALT+TAB’ ing.

Courtesy Google Google Transliteration IME is an input method editor which allows users to enter text in one of the supported languages using a roman keyboard. Users can type a word the way it sounds using Latin characters and Google Transliteration IME will convert the word to its native script. Note that this is not the same as translation — it is the sound of the words that is converted from one alphabet to the other, not their meaning. Converted content will always be in Unicode.

Google Transliteration IME is currently available for 22 different languages – Amharic, Arabic, Bengali, Farsi (Persian), Greek, Gujarati, Hebrew, Hindi, Kannada, Malayalam, Marathi, Nepali, Oriya, Punjabi, Russian, Sanskrit, Serbian, Sinhalese, Tamil, Telugu, Tigrinya and Urdu.

True Lies

Recently, I happened to see some Indian matrimonial sites and found a similarity in most of the brides and bridegrooms’ profiles. All brides were slim, fair looking, homely, adjustable and all bride grooms were tall, handsome, non smoking, non drinking, earning well in a reputed company.

Me : How will life be if everything one proclaims seems to be true?

Balaji : Life will be boring.

online booking

I always suggest my friends and relatives to use the online booking facility, if available, for any kind of utility or services they use. I explain them how it will be easy and how we can save time and energy by using this online booking facility. Online booking facility has come a long way in India than it was a few years back. Balaji used to say that people in UK live on ebay. Three years before, I remember seeing Umesh shopping online for movies and stuff. He said that he was cautious and tested the site before he bought anything from it.

Even our Indian railways did not stay back in this race and plunged in with the offer to book tickets three months in advance to the journey. I have used it and it is kind of ok. I was trying to use a local and famous bus travels’ site today to check for availability of bus tickets. They wanted me to register before I queried their system. I obliged and registered. Logged in and was trying to block some tickets and when I hit the back button in my browser accidentally, it took me to another person’s account with the name Karthick. I was able to view his mobile number, email address and even had an option to change the password to his account. I was shocked and immediately mailed the person and alerted him of the vulnerability this site had. Now that, I am afraid to suggest anyone of online shopping.

Why does not Indian e-commerce websites look for the best in the market and use those techniques?

How can one give the credit card information to such poor sites?

Why does not Indian e-booking sites accept a pay partner like Paypal?

P.S.:- I have listed below the sites I use frequently for online booking and have not found any problems as of now.

Hacked by Moozilla

Recently, I have see many instances of this browser hijack in many machines. People are going nuts with this infection and here I am nearing the solution to wipe it off from the machines which are infected.

Browse and Explorer Hijack ?

Yes. IE gets hijacked after the infection and whenevr IE is opened up, home page gets hijacked and re-routed to http://www.lastchaos.in.th/ .

Hacked by Moozilla

Apart from the browser hijack, it hacks the windows explorer. In a infected machine, left double click will not work to open the drives under the windows explorer. Right click and open or explore will do that. So, it hijacks the IE and also the windows explorer.

Consult Sabaree

Sabaree, my colleague, is a good pal to me from the day I joined my current job. He is elder than I and has expertise in counseling. His favorite area is HR counseling although he does concentrate in other domains. SabareeAfter seeing my blog, he always asked me to set one up for him. We used to discuss about the same for quite sometime with great fervor and forget it. Today something triggered me to do it for him and at last I did it. Balaji was the one who set things up for my blog. Today, I stole the tricks from his bags to set the site up and running with in a few hours. Consultsabaree.com is setup as a blog and it will be customized as a online counseling portal. I will rather have Sabaree write about his idea behind setting this portal as he is going to be the owner for consultsabaree.com’s content.

Thanks to Balaji, Yahoo domains, Dreamhost,WordPress consultsabaree.com is ready to rock.

Hope all your support will be extended to Sabaree as well. :-)

User Agent String Utility version 2 for IE 7.0

Scenario :

You have IE 7.0 as the only browser installed in your Windows XP or Vista machine. You are forced to open a website built only for IE 6.0 or earlier versions. You do not have not have options of other browsers. What will you do? Time to apply the brakes? Nah! Read ahead…
Solution :
Relax! You are not the only one who is struck up. Folks at Microsoft thought about this and have released a handy tool for Internet Explorer 7.0 to open a browser window emulating IE 6.0. It is User Agent String Utility version 2. It downloads in a few seconds and installs within a minute.
So, for all those websites coded only for IE 6.0 or earlier can be opened with this small tool. Works fine in Windows vista too. :-)
You need to have a genuine copy of windows for this installation. Oops! Forgot that IE 7.0 does not install in pirated copies. Or did someone already break the rules? ;-)

P.S. :- For those of you who really wanted to know how User agent string works. Rest of you, grab the tool and enjoy surfing. :-)
