Following Salman Khan, Neel Chatterjee, Aliston Pereira with 5 of his friends have come under media’s light for hit and run cases. Last night, Aliston Pereira and his friends, who were in high spirits , shattered the dreams of 20 poor souls sleeping peacefully in the pavement of Bandhra’s Carter road, Mumbai. Six of them were killed and fourteen of them injured. The accused were returning from a five star hotel’s night club and were on their way to a friend’s birthday party. Aliston Pereira, the man behind the wheels, was drunk. When asked about this gory incident, he says that his car lost control due to a mechanical problem and ran into the construction workers. A bottle of liquor was also found in the accused’s car. Pereira and his friends were took into police custody. He is booked for culpable homicide not mounting to murder and others are booked under the Bombay Prohibition Act. Pereira is still under police custody and his friends are released out on bail.

In September 2004, Stephanie was killed on the road by drunken youths. Chennai was shocked by the incident. And since then the police has tightened the security measures a bit more and is a bit harsh on the night clubbers. In a way, it is good as it guarantees a safe environment for people to live. I have seen myself a few of these drunken youths, who race at Marina and Besant beaches in their modified bikes and cars. It is really difficult for the citizens to walk or drive on the roads when these unruly youths go crazy and do all the stunts on roads.

Bike, car stunts in movies and TV ads also inspire young people to try them on roads. Young people fall into the trap that they are super cool if they are involved in any of these.
A lot of examples include the movie Ghulaam, Rang De Basanti, The recent Apache, Pulsar ads and the list goes on. Not only the media, the parents of these young people are also to be blamed. If they were careful enough in drawing the line of control at certain point, these kind of incidents can be avoided.

One more month, when all the media attention starts to move away from this case, the rich kids will be let out free and they will start clubbing again. The poor as always will hold demonstrations and will go quiet as they cannot stand and fight for their rights.

Where is justice?

Will the rich kids be punished for this gory act?

Will the police tighten up more security and punish drunken drivers?

I have a few suggestions for the police and the people to stop these kind of incidents from happening.

1. On every major road, have check posts and conduct regular checks on people for drunken driving. Especially, near pubs and night clubs, have more people to check. If a person is caught for drunken driving, put him under bars for that whole night and leak the news out to the dailies. This should be done irrespective of the status the person has in the society.

2. A lot people get away by using their high profile contacts when they are caught for drunken driving on the roads. If a person tries to boast his influence by saying Do you know who I am ? , He should be smacked at least ten times in the back and put under bars. The next time he will dare to think of using it.

3. Close all the pubs and night clubs at 11.00 PM.

4. Canceling of licenses for the joints who serve liquour for minors and are open after the stipulated time. The owners of these joints must be put under bars for at least ten years.

5. Seizing the bikes and cars that are modified or tuned for racing and stunts on road.

6. Curfew for bikes and cars to run after 10.00 PM on New Year’s eve. This way, all the drunkards will shut indoors and gory incidents can be avoided.

In this way, we can build a healthy and safer society. What ya say?

I strongly think that NDTV is blowing up things with their recent NDTV Exclusives . Particularly, the incidents quoted below raises a few questions, in my mind, on the motto of the news they air. NDTV has been airing these incidents non-stop for 24 hours. Is it done for hype or for commercial things?

News 1

In the recently concluded ICC Champions Trophy 2006, Australia were roped into a controversy that they nudged Pawar out of the podium during the prize distribution ceremony. When Pawar brushed aside the issue as nothing serious and unintentional, NDTV aired the footage at least a hundred times. It hyped the issue with opinion interviews from current and yesteryear cricketers, politicians et all. A few days later, Australian captain Ricky Ponting offered to apologise for the team’s action. He wanted to speak to the BCCI president Pawar and find whether the latter was offended or the media was making a mountain out of a molehill. Today, Pawar calls the nudging action as uncivilised.

Did Pawar change his mind after watching the footage for hours?

News 2

With much controversy surrounding the Delhi sealings, NDTV is into it again and is trying to make most out of it with its exclusive coverage. Apart from playing footages of the Delhi sealings, it is showing tickers which have the latest list of places that are sealed. An example which I saw in the ticker goes like this, The Haldiram’s restaurant in some part of Delhi is sealed . It has been running this ticker all day today.

Wouldn’t this spark violence among people if they are shown a thing over and over again? I have read somewhere that it is easy to influence people’s mind by playing a footage over and over again.

News 3

Ace Pakistan fast bowler Shoaib Akthar gets into controversy for disciplinary issues. This is again a NDTV Exclusive. Already into trouble for being accused of using performance enhancing drugs, Shoaib Akthar is getting into more trouble with news that he slapped the Pakistan cricket coach Bob Woolmer and involved in a disco brawl and mis-behaved with Indian coach Greg Chappel’s wife. NDTV has got a news to chew for several days. Already it has started airing opinion interviews about this and is creating a controversy out of this.

I don’t understand where NDTV is heading with this. Either they are trying to become the more popular channel featuring controversial news or they are doing this for commericial things. Whatever, If this hyping continues, I may think of switching over to some other news channel. :-(

What do you think?

Contagious concerts

We all know that yawning is contagious. Have you realised that singing is also contagious? Yes it is! I have tested and tried.

What is meant by contagious ?

Easily diffused or spread as from one person to another. ex: a contagious grin, contagious disease etc;

How singing is contagious and helpful?

Try this. When you walk into office or home , keep huming a hit song. If there are people around, atleast one will catch up with you and starts to hum or sing that song. Change the song after a while and see. The same person will change the song and join you. This way, one can create a mood around him. That’s the reason when I step into office I make it a point that I hum any fast beat numbers and have people joining me in. That way, a peppy mood is created and the day goes on real smooth. So, I infer that singing or humming is contagious and sets the mood for the people around you. :-P Is there any medical term for this? or Am I the first one to find it out? ;-) I am coining the word contagious concert. So, start staging your own contagious concerts.

P.S. :- While drafting this post, learnt from an old friend that when one hums the other sings and vice-versa. True! :-)

I feel guilty

Last night , a conversation between me and my best friend , who turns out to be my alter-ego , popped up. It made me think a lot and blurt out a few things which have been lingering in my mind. Here I am with the transcript….

My Alter-ego : Hello sir! Why are you in a pensive mood tonight?

Me : Hmmm! I feel guilty. I have hurt people a lot of times. Now, I feel bad about it.

My Alter-ego : Why such a thought suddenly?

Me : I don’t know. What do I do now?

My Alter-ego : Good question! I would say that you apologise publicly for all your blunder and idiotic gestures that might have hurt people. Also, change your attitude. OK?

Me : Yes! I will do so. Thanks a lot again!

After this, I slept with a clear mind and here I am writing this post. I sincerely apologise to everyone who I have hurt either directly or indirectly. I feel ashamed of it. Today on, there is going to be a change in my attitude and the talkative Karthi is no more gonna prevail. You will see a bit matured , thinking , quiet and a kind person in me hereafter. Please do let me know if I deviate from it. After all to err is human and to forgive is divine.

Remember to remember a person’s name

Gosh! How frustrating would it be when someone addresses you by a name that is not yours? It pains even mush when people who have been introduced to you forget your name after the first meeting.

I have read somewhere that remembering a person’s name is the first step in developing a healthy relationship. What happens is people take the introductions lightly and tend to forget the other person’s name. I hate a people who forget my name after the first acquaintance. At the same time, I make sure that I don’t forget the names soon.

“Remember to remember a person’s name”

Frustrating subscriber unavailable messages

I commute to office by train. It takes around 2 hours to reach Tambaram (where my Office is) from Ambattur (where I reside). I usually kill the time with a book or listening to my Portable mp3 player.

One night, when I was returning from office, I was listening to a guy near me. He was very much disgusted with his mobile phone service provider. He was trying to reach someone for a very long time but he could not. He was frustrated to hear the automated voice response from the service provider end. He wanted to share his anger with someone and there I was. It seems that he has been trying to reach one of his clients for more than an hour and he got the same Voice response from the other end. He was speaking in Tamil and told me that he was frustrated even more to hear the message in English. I offered my help and tried reaching the number from my mobile. To my surprise, I found that the number he was trying to reach was temporarily out of service. Poor guy he is, I explained this to him. He responded stating in Tamil, Sir! I thought the lady was screaming all along that the network was busy. Poor guy he is!

This made me to think about the cellular providers who use the IVR system to frustrate the customers.

The guy does not understand English. After all, he wants to make some calls and run his business. Is there any option for him to choose his preferred language? If there is one, is he educated about it?

If this is what customer service levels are, how will an illiterate Indian survive in the world of IVR which blurt out only in English?

Insane management!

A pair of sunglasses made me think a lot!

I am starting this post bemused with the fact that most human beings follow certain illogical views. After all,I was also following a lot of these quite sometime ago.

Ok! let me stop beating around the bush and come to the point here. Not long ago, I yearned to buy a nice pair of goggles for myself. That was during my college days.I could not afford it then. after I started earning, I bought a good and stylish pair of sunglasses.it cost me around 1350 INR.Initially, I bought it with the intention to show off. A lot of my friends had a mindset that sunglasses are to be worn either when you go on a bike or on occassions when you go out with a girl. Pedestrians with sunglasses always get a weird look.As if sunglasses are made only for people who go around in bikes, they get admiring looks.I had an argument with a guy in the sunglass issue and he surprised me with the following logic.I am putting the same word he uttered.

“Machi (slang for a friend in Tamil) sunglasses suit only bikers because they drive at high speeds and chances of eye getting all the dust is high”.

What I wonder is,

1.aren’t pedestrians walking on the same road where the pollution levels are the same?

2.Aren’t sunglasses used for eye protection?(protection against UV rays and polllution)
3.Who in the world has told that sunglasses are to be worn only by bikers?

when I asked him, there was no answer.I understood that people have a lot views which are completely illogical.Atleast, I am pretty sure that I will have a little of them.
Now a days, I have started wearing my glasses when I ride my bicycle and I have started to enjoy a lot of gazes from gals. This way, I am getting a few!

hehe!:-)
